Dr. Muhammad Atif Irshad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at The University of Lahore and serves as a Collaborative Consultant Research Group Leader at The Green Institute of Chemical, Biomedical and Environmental Sciences (GICBES). Holding a PhD in Environmental Sciences, his research emphasizes the development and application of green technologies- such as eco-friendly adsorbents, nanomaterials, and bioremediation strategies; for the remediation of contaminated water systems. His work specifically addresses the removal of heavy metals, emerging contaminants, and pathogens. A distinctive element of his research is the integration of the Health Risk Index (HRI) into water quality assessments, providing a scientific basis for evidence-driven environmental policy and public health decisions.
As a collaborative leader, Dr. Atif fosters interdisciplinary teamwork, guiding researchers in the pursuit of innovative solutions that link laboratory findings with real-world environmental challenges. His teaching career, which began at the high school level in Science and Mathematics, has expanded to the university setting, where he delivers undergraduate and graduate courses including Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Alternative Energy Sources, Advanced Bioremediation Techniques, and Cleaner Production Technologies. His student-centered teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking, inclusivity, and experiential learning through interactive lectures, discussions, and case studies.
Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Atif actively contributes to community and institutional development by organizing awareness walks, poster competitions, and academic events centered on sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Looking ahead, he seeks to strengthen collaborations with academia, industry, and government agencies to scale up cost-effective, ESG-focused remediation strategies, ultimately advancing environmental sustainability, safeguarding public health, and informing progressive policy development.
